Web host ThePlanet has announced the immediate availability of the Quad Xeon 7550 server, equipped with the new Nehalem EX processor, making it The Planet's most powerful server in the company's portfolio.
Intel's new Xeon 7500 processor series debuted late last month, featuring an average performance three times that of Intel's existing Xeon 7400 series, and possessing more than 20 new reliability features. Built on a Dell PowerEdge R910 rack server chassis, the eight-core Quad Xeon 7550 marks the first four-socket addition to The Planet's server fleet, according to its Thursday announcement, offering new levels of scalability and advanced reliability for mission-critical applications.
Providing 2.0GHz processing, a 18MB cache and 1066MHz bus speed, The Planet's PowerEdge R910 rack server in its default configuration includes 32GB of RAM, 2TB of bandwidth and two 300GB SAS drives, providing an ideal platform for virtualization and cloud deployments. Also, with hyper-threading is enabled, the maximum core density of 32 increases to 64 cores for greater throughput and responsiveness.
"Customers that run large in-memory databases, applications or business-critical workloads require powerful hardware that provides maximum performance, expandability and high availability," The Planet dedicated hosting and global services general manager Todd Mitchell said in a statement. "With the biggest performance leap in Xeon history, the new Quad Xeon 7550 delivers, with enhanced memory bandwidth, socket scalability and more than 20 new reliability features. Customers can effectively host their mission-critical data and applications on this versatile new platform, backed by The Planet's enterprise-class network and data centers."
Like every server from The Planet, its PowerEdge R910 server comes bundled with business-class antivirus software Symantec Endpoint Protection, along with 10GB of Storage Cloud, the company's robust cloud storage solution. Customers also receive the Parallels Small Business Panel for their hosting environments.

The new server is now available to all virtual and private and rack customers, and will open up to all other environments by end of month.
Last month, The Planet announced the availability of the Dell PowerEdge R710 server, equipped with Intel's Xeon X5600 series processor, built on the new Westmere micro-architecture. Prior to the PowerEdge R910, the PowerEdge R710 server was The Planet's most powerful server.
