Construction has begun on a new $110 million eco-friendly data center in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Set for completion in 2012, the data center is being build on Elliot Street. The facility will preserve the front part of Technical High School.
The project will generate at least 50 to 60 full-time jobs when it is completed.
There will also be an additional 180 construction jobs created during the two year data center project, says Governor Deval Patrick.
The facility, titled Springfield Data Center, will be one of the most environmentally-friendly buildings in New England.
The ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday was attended by Patrick, as well as other elected leaders, community activists, and Technical High School teachers and alumni.
Massachusetts's sensitive data is backed up in 183 individual facilities across the state.
Once the Springfield Data Center is completed, the data will be migrated there.
